Glaucoma Treatment

Glaucoma is an eye disease in which a person’s optic nerves are damaged. This complication usually occurs when fluid collects in the front of the eye. This excess water accumulated in front of the eye will increase eye pressure and as a result the person’s optic nerve will be damaged. Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness in people over 60 years of age. Of course, blindness can be largely prevented by timely diagnosis and treatment. Glaucoma

Your eyes are constantly secreting clear fluid. As new fluid flows into the eyes, the same amount of water must be drained from inside the eyes. The part where water comes out of the eye is known as the discharge angle. This process keeps the intraocular pressure (IOP) constant. However, if the drainage angle of the eye does not work properly, a lot of water will collect inside the eye as a result of the secretion of new fluid and its non-drainage. As a result, the intraocular pressure will increase and the optic nerves will be damaged.

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ

What causes Glaucoma?

The exact cause of Glaucoma still eludes scientists. The basic element that contributes to the damage is the blockage of passages that normally allow the fluid within your eye to drain. Because of that, fluid builds up in your eye and causes an increase in pressure on the optic nerve. The nerve fibers and blood vessels of the optic nerve are very fragile and easily damaged by this pressure, thus resulting in vision loss.

Will I go blind from Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is known to cause blindness but it can be prevented. If it is diagnosed at an early stage, the damage can be controlled. If you don’t treat it at the right time, you are most likely to lose peripheral vision first and then the central vision, which may result in complete blindness.

How is Glaucoma treated?

Normally, Glaucoma is treated with prescription eye drops and medicines. You must take these regularly for them to be effective. In some cases, Glaucoma can be treated by therapy or surgery. To be clear, any treatment for Glaucoma does not restore eyesight, it is to prevent further vision loss and damage. That is why the sooner it is diagnosed, the better.

Can Glaucoma be cured?

Unfortunately, Glaucoma cannot be cured. You can take preventive measures to stop further damage to your eye health and eye sight.

What can you not do after glaucoma surgery?

During recovery, patients are advised to avoid heaving lifting, straining and bending for the first couple weeks following surgery until the operated eye completely heals. Conventional glaucoma surgery carries more risk compared to laser glaucoma surgery

Cause of glaucoma

Your eyes are constantly secreting clear fluid. As new fluid flows into the eyes, the same amount of water must be drained from inside the eyes. The part where water comes out of the eye is known as the discharge angle. This process keeps the intraocular pressure (IOP) constant. However, if the drainage angle of the eye does not work properly, a lot of water will collect inside the eye as a result of the secretion of new fluid and its non-drainage. As a result, the intraocular pressure will increase and the optic nerves will be damaged.

The optic nerve is made up of millions of tiny nerve fibers. This nervous system is exactly like the small wires that are made up of many smaller wires. With the death of each of these fibers, a blind spot will be created within a person’s range of vision. Of course, you may not notice these blind spots for a long time until most of these nerve fibers form in a dead area and a larger blind spot. Also, when all the fibers inside the eye die, the person completely loses his sight and becomes blind.

treatment of glaucoma in Iran

Treatment of glaucoma in Iran: How is glaucoma and glaucoma treated?

Your doctor may prescribe eye drops, or use laser or microscopic surgery to reduce intraocular pressure.

Eye drops for the treatment of glaucoma:

These tear drops reduce or improve eye discharge, thus reducing eye pressure. Side effects may include allergies, redness, itching, dark vision and irritated eyes. Some glaucoma medications may be used. It will affect your heart and lungs. Be sure to tell your doctor about any other medications you are taking or are allergic to.

treatment of Glaucoma in Iran: Laser surgery to treat glaucoma:

This procedure can increase fluid flow from the eye to people with open-angle glaucoma. If you have angle-closure glaucoma, you can stop fluid blockage.

These methods include:

Iridotomy: Makes a small hole in the iris to allow fluid to flow more freely.

Endoscopic procedure: in treatment of the middle layer of the eye to reduce the production of microscopic fluid in a procedure called trabeculectomy, the doctor creates a new channel to drain the fluid and reduce eye pressure. Sometimes this type of glaucoma surgery fails and needs to be done again. Your doctor may insert a tube to help drain the fluid, and surgery can cause temporary or permanent loss of the eye, as well as bleeding or infection.

Open-angle glaucoma is often treated with a combination of eye drops, laser trabeculoplasty, and microscopic surgery; Doctors in the United States tend to start with medication, but there is evidence that early laser surgery or surgical microscopy may be better for some people.
