Cataract treatment in Iran: What is the process of cataract surgery?

Cataract surgery is usually done on an outpatient basis, drops are used to numb the eye, and sometimes sedatives are used for patients.
The most common method for treating cataracts is phacoemulsification.

In this method, first a small incision is made next to the cornea and with a small device with high frequency ultrasound, the opaque lens is crushed and removed from the eye.
This surgical procedure was first invented by Charles Kelman in 1967 and revolutionized the field of ophthalmology for cataract surgery.

In the past, before this method was invented, cataract surgeons had to make larger incisions to remove the lens from the eye, so they had to suture the symmetry after removing the lens, but fortunately today this is no longer necessary.
After removing the opaque lens, it is replaced by a synthetic lens made of silicone, plastic or acrylic. This replacement is done through a cut of about 36 mm.

This artificial lens is most often placed behind the iris.

At the end of the cataract operation, a protective coating is placed on the patient’s eye by the ophthalmologist and the patient will be discharged from the hospital after a short rest.
Synthetic intraocular lenses function similar to natural lenses and focus light on the retina.
Patients with bilateral cataracts (both eyes) should allow 1 to 3 weeks between cataract operations in each eye.
