Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ

How long does it take to correct strabismus?

It’s normal for a newborn’s eyes to wander or cross occasionally during the first few months of life. But by the time a baby is 4 to 6 months old, the eyes usually straighten out.

What is the best age for Strabismus surgery?

Strabismus surgery can be performed in children as young as four months of age and it is an important option for older children and adults as well. It’s better to perform surgery as early as possible, because the brain circuits for binocular vision (using the two eyes together) are most adaptable at a young age.

How long does it take for the eye to heal after Strabismus surgery?

By six to eight weeks after surgery, healing is nearing completion and more accurate assessments may be made. Even after this time or with apparent success there can be changes, particularly in cases where there is no binocular visual function or evolving medical conditions such as thyroid eye disease.

Can strabismus be corrected in adults?

Yes. Adults can benefit from some of the same treatment options that are available to children for treating strabismus. Treatment options may include prismatic glasses, specialized exercises to regain the coordination of both eyes (fusional exercises) and surgery.

Is strabismus surgery the only treatment option for an eye turn?

No. Strabismus treatment options depend on the type of strabismus— direction of eye turns, angle of deviations, the presence of convergence insufficiency, double vision, or amblyopia (lazy eye), etc.

Strabismus

You may have seen many people whose eyes are out of alignment or have so-called strabismus, and you may have thought that this is aesthetically unpleasant. But the only unattractive appearance is not the problem of squinty eyes. On the other hand, Iran, with its strong medical infrastructure and the most reasonable prices, is a good destination for the treatment of aberrations. The scientific term of squint is strabismus; It is used to define eyes that cannot be aligned in one direction. strabismus may occur intermittently in one or both eyes; It may also appear always or only occasionally.

Strabismus may be in one or both eyes, inward (cross-eyed) or outward (whale eye) in up and down direction. It is a type of strabismus is latent and it is a strabismus that appears by removing binocular vision (closing one eye) and is known as latent strabismus. Strabismus causes diplopia and decreased depth of vision. In cases of monocular and, if left untreated, leads to lazy eye.

The alignment of the eyes is not fully developed at birth. The change in position of true eye development manifests itself at 3-4 months of age, but may occur in childhood or later.

Treatment of ocular aberration in Iran: What is the cause?

The movement of the eye is controlled by messages that travel from the brain to the four muscles around the eye. Muscular imbalance between the two eyes can cause this problem. On the other hand, if there is a lack of ability to focus the same way in the eyes, the brain cannot tolerate images with different concentrations, so it does not consider messages from one field of view. Eventually, the weaker eye becomes unusable due to improper use, creating a “lazy” or wandering eye.

Family history of strabismus, Down syndrome, thyroid disease, ocular tumors, damage to the central nervous system of the fetus, birth injuries, and improper use of the eye may also cause strabismus. In rare cases, brain damage or head injury can also cause strabismus.

Treatment of strabismus

Any inconsistency in eye movements after 6 months should be noted. Parents should also have a thorough examination of their children if they report diplopia in older children. strabismus can be treated, but if it is not treated in time, the child will not be saved from the strabismus, and eventually his squint eye will suffer from vision loss; Of course, adults can also be treated, treatment in adults can eliminate the patient’s diplopia or at least give a normal appearance to the eyes. The treatment of strabismus is similar to the treatment of lazy eye, and the goal of treatment is to improve vision and achieve the best possible vision, aesthetic appearance, and to achieve the best direction for the eyes and to establish a single binocular vision. Treatment may include glasses or stronger eyelids to correct an imbalance of concentration (causing the weaker eye to work), exercises related to the eye muscles, botulinum toxin (currently only used in adult’s condition, or eye surgery) or surgery for correcting the situation of eye muscles.

The optimal age for surgery is 2 to 4 years old, but this operation can be performed until 7 years old. After this age, the operation is performed, but only the strabismus can be corrected, and the affected eye will have some vision loss, and even after the operation, this eye will have a tendency of becoming squint again. The surgery is performed on the muscles responsible for eye movements, so the eyeball is not split and no components are altered. Sometimes a second operation is needed.
