Lumbar disc herniation, also known as lumbar disc herniation or rupture, usually occurs in the lower back. The lumbar disc swells when the jelly-like core presses against its outer layer as a result of erosion, aging, or weakening damage. This pressure on the outer layer can cause pain in the lower back. If the disc is worn or damaged, the center of the jelly may dislodge in all directions.
