Lumbar disc herniation, also known as lumbar disc herniation or rupture, usually occurs in the lower back. The lumbar disc swells when the jelly-like core presses against its outer layer as a result of erosion, aging, or weakening damage. This pressure on the outer layer can cause pain in the lower back. If the disc is worn or damaged, the center of the jelly may dislodge in all directions.
In the human spine, there are cushions or plates of cartilage between the lumbar vertebrae, called discs. The lumbar disc has a jelly-like structure made up of water and protein.
The human back is made up of 5 vertebrae in the lower part of which there is a triangular bone called the sacrum. The discs act as shock absorbers in the spine. . The discs absorb the pressure on the spine and improve movement between the vertebrae. When the central nucleus of the disc ruptures or becomes herniated, pain in the lower back and muscles increases and needs to be treated immediately. This condition can increase the pain in the leg and consequently sciatica.
